How to apply Heroes Shield
Step 1
Get your walls ready
A little preparation goes a long way. Start by brushing away any dust or dirt and removing any loose or peeling paint. If needed, gently sand any rough edges to create a nice smooth surface that’s ready for decorating.
If your walls have already been painted, give them a quick clean with sugar soap to remove everyday marks and grease. If the existing finish is shiny, a light sand will help Heroes Shield bond properly to the surface.
If you’ve spotted mould, don’t worry. Simply treat the area with Heroes Mould Remover first and allow it to dry completely before decorating. This gives Heroes Shield the best possible start, helping it protect your home from the conditions that allow mould to return.

Step 2
Smooth out the imperfections
Don’t worry if your walls have a few bumps and marks; most do.
Fill any cracks or holes with some filler and let it dry. Once it’s dry, give the area a light sand so it blends in with the rest of the wall. It’s a small job that makes a big difference to the finished look.
If you’re decorating onto fresh plaster, you’ll also need a mist coat first. This can be made by thinning a suitable emulsion with 20% water or by using a contract emulsion designed for new plaster.
Step 3
Build your defence
Now it’s time to put Heroes Shield to work.
Give your tin of Heroes Shield a gentle stir before you start. Use a medium pile roller for covering larger areas and a good-quality brush to reach those smaller details.
Heroes Shield is ready to use straight from the tin, so there’s no need to add anything before you begin. Always apply two full coats to build the protection your walls need.
Allow around four hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second. Every home is different, so if the room is cooler, more humid or has less airflow, simply give it a little extra time before continuing.
A HELPING HAND
The coverage rate for Heroes Shield is 6–7 m² per litre on smooth surfaces. Rough or uneven surfaces will need a little more paint.
Step 4
Make the room your own
Once Heroes Shield has dried, it’s time to make the room feel like home.
You can leave it as a clean white matt finish or make the room feel like your own.
For the full Heroes System, finish with two coats of Heroes Pure. You’ll have thousands of colours to choose from, with air-purifying technology working away on your walls too.
If you’ve already chosen another water-based paint, that’s absolutely fine too.

Treat the affected area with Heroes Mould Remover before you start decorating. Once it’s done its job, wipe away any mould left over with a clean, damp cloth or sponge and make sure the wall to dry fully before applying Heroes Shield.
Heroes Shield is available in white. It can be left as it is, overcoated with Heroes Pure or painted over with any water-based paint.
As long as the your previous paint is in good condition, there’s no need to remove it all. Simply scrape away any loose or peeling paint, smooth any rough edges and make sure the surface is clean before you start decorating.
Definitely. After two coats, Heroes Shield can be left as a white finish, but if you’d like to add colour you can paint over it with Heroes Pure or any water-based emulsion while still getting all of the good stuff.
Heroes Shield was made to help stop the conditions that allow mould to grow, rather than simply covering it up once it appears. Its clever Micro-sphere Technology holds on to warmth, reducing condensation and creating an environment where mould is less likely to return.
